Replications, Restudies and Theory Testing: New Opportunities to Advance Your Research
Two-Part Professional Development Workshop | ANZAM 2026 Conference | Newcastle, Australia |
1–3 December 2026
Proposal submission deadline for Part 2: 23 November 2026
How can revisiting existing research lead to new insights, stronger theories, and publishable papers? What can we learn by replicating influential findings, returning to earlier qualitative studies, or putting established theories to the test?
Join us at the ANZAM Conference in Newcastle for a two-part Professional Development Workshop exploring three valuable approaches to advancing management and organisation research: quantitative replications, qualitative restudies, and empirical tests of published theories.
Designed for researchers working across micro and macro areas of management, the workshop offers practical guidance on developing rigorous studies that revisit existing research and make meaningful contributions to the literature. It will be particularly valuable for PhD candidates, early-career academics, research supervisors, and established scholars interested in methodological rigour, theory development, and publication opportunities.
Part 1: Core Concepts and Best Practices
Open to all ANZAM conference participants – no proposal required.
In this interactive session, experienced journal editors will introduce the three research approaches and explain how they can contribute to cumulative knowledge and theory development.
Participants will learn how to:
- Identify promising opportunities for quantitative replications, qualitative restudies, and empirical theory testing.
- Design rigorous studies that revisit, challenge, or extend previous research.
- Develop a convincing scholarly contribution from these approaches.
- Position such studies for publication in leading management journals.
Presentations will draw on examples from different areas of management research, followed by opportunities for questions and discussion.
Part 2: Paper Development Workshop – Personalised Feedback on Your Research Proposal
Participation requires submission of a short research proposal before the conference.
Have an idea for a replication, restudy, or theory-testing paper? Part 2 offers an opportunity to discuss your project with experienced journal editors and receive individualised feedback on its research design, theoretical contribution, and publication potential.
The workshop welcomes proposals in three streams:
- Quantitative Replications: Reproducing, replicating, or extending findings from previously published quantitative studies.
- Qualitative Restudies: Revisiting existing qualitative research to reassess findings, develop fresh insights, or refine theory.
- Tests of Published Theories: Empirically examining published theoretical propositions, assumptions, or competing explanations.
Participants will receive practical recommendations and guidance on developing their proposals towards potential submission to:
- The Organization Studies Special Issue on Qualitative Restudies.
- The Journal of Management Scientific Reports (JOMSR), which welcomes quantitative replications and empirical theory-testing studies.
Researchers interested in Part 2 are strongly encouraged to attend Part 1 as well.
Meet the Workshop Presenters
The workshop brings together four scholars with extensive editorial and research experience:
- Professor Tine Köhler, University of Melbourne – Co-Editor-in-Chief, Organizational Research Methods, and Guest Editor of the Organization Studies Special Issue on Qualitative Restudies.
- Professor Maria Kraimer, University at Buffalo – Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Management Scientific Reports.
- Professor Xavier Martin, Tilburg University – Senior Associate Editor, Journal of Management Scientific Reports.
- Professor Scott Seibert, University at Buffalo – Associate Editor, Journal of Management Scientific Reports.
How to Apply for Part 2
Submit a 3–4-page proposal outlining:
- The original study or published theory you intend to revisit or test.
- Why the proposed replication, restudy, or theory test is worthwhile.
- Your proposed research approach, methods, and potential scholarly contribution.
Please include the author name(s), contact details, and selected stream at the top of your proposal.
Submission deadline: 23 November 2026
Email proposals to: tkoehler@unimelb.edu.au
(with the subject line “proposal for PDW on Replications, Restudies, Theory Testing” at the top of the proposal, indicate the author name(s) and contact information and which stream the proposal is for)

Whether you are exploring a new research idea or developing an existing project, this workshop offers an opportunity to sharpen your research design, engage with experienced editors, and discover new ways to make a contribution by revisiting what we already know.
We look forward to welcoming and supporting researchers from Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, and beyond in December!
