“It creates a mindset”: A critical exploration of the role of Higher Education in
developing Responsible Careers
This paper critically explores the role of higher education (HE) in shaping responsible careers, careers
oriented towards addressing social and environmental challenges. Drawing on qualitative data from
an open-ended survey (n=48) and in-depth interviews (n=13) with students and graduates, we
examine how responsibility is understood, developed and constrained. Participants conceptualised
responsible careers as involving ethical conduct, social contribution and sustainability, but also as
contingent and negotiated. Findings highlight HE as a key formative context, providing exposure to
ideas, language and frameworks that enable students to interpret careers through a responsibility
lens. However, participants also reported anticipated and experienced tensions in organisational
contexts characterised by limited agency, economic pressures and uneven commitments to
responsibility. Structural inequalities further shaped access to pursuing responsible careers.
Empirically, the study deepens understanding of how responsible careers are formed; theoretically, it
positions HE as central to this process; practically, it questions how graduates are prepared for
responsible careers.
